Getting Here & Practicalities

Your journey to Jou-Suba Homestay

Getting to Jousuba Homestay takes a little planning — and that’s exactly why this part of Raja Ampat remains so special. The journey is part of the experience, taking you from busy cities to one of the most remote and beautiful corners of Indonesia.

Below is a clear, step-by-step guide to help you plan with confidence.

Step 1: Fly to Sorong (SOQ)

Your journey begins in Sorong, the main gateway to Raja Ampat, located in West Papua.

  • Sorong is accessible via domestic flights from Jakarta, Makassar, Manado, and other major Indonesian hubs.
  • We recommend arriving in Sorong the day before your ferry, as flights can occasionally be delayed.

Step 2: Ferry from Sorong to Waisai

From Sorong harbour, take the public ferry to Waisai, the capital of Raja Ampat.

  • Ferries usually run once or twice daily (schedules can change).
  • Travel time is approximately 2 hours.
  • Tickets are purchased at the harbour on the day of travel.

Waisai is the last major town before heading into the more remote islands of Raja Ampat.

Step 3: Boat Transfer to Jousuba Homestay

From Waisai, the journey continues by private local boat to Jousuba Homestay on Yef Kabu Island, West Waigeo.

  • Boat transfers are arranged locally and coordinated around ferry arrival times.
  • Travel time from Waisai is approximately 2 hours, depending on sea conditions.
  • This final leg is a scenic ride through islands, jungle coastline, and open ocean.

Once you arrive, there are no roads, no villages, and no crowds — just the island, the reef, and the sea.The journey may feel long, but once you arrive you will immediately understand why it’s worth it!

Raja Ampat Marine Park Entry Permit

All visitors to Raja Ampat must purchase a Marine Park Entry Permit.

  • The permit is valid for one calendar year.
  • It can be purchased in Sorong or Waisai before heading onward.
  • Fees are set by the local government and subject to change.

The price is IDR 700,000 for international passport holders, or IDR 425,000 for Indonesian visitors. Children under 12 years of age are not required to have a permit.

The permit is valid for 12 months from the date of purchase.

This permit supports marine conservation and community programmes throughout Raja Ampat.

Raja Ampat Visitors Entry Ticket

The Raja Ampat Regency Government requires all visitors to purchase the Raja Ampat Visitor Entry Ticket.

The price is IDR 1,000,000 per person for international visitors. IDR 300,000 for domestic visitors.

You apply and pay in person at the Raja Ampat Regency Tourism Office in the port building at Waisai. You scan the QR code found in the port, fill out your details and then pay at the window – card payments are accepted. Once you have paid you will be emailed a receipt which you then upload to the site (that you started to complete through the QR code), and confirm.

What to Bring

Jousuba Homestay is remote, so packing thoughtfully will make your stay more comfortable.

Recommended items include:

  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Snorkelling gear (limited gear may be available locally)
  • Cash (no ATMs beyond Waisai)
  • Torch or headlamp
  • Light, breathable clothing
  • Any personal medications

Electricity is available in the evenings, but power outlets are limited, so a power bank can be useful.

Electricity & Connectivity

  • Electricity: Generator-powered, typically from sunset until around midnight.
  • Wi-Fi: Free Starlink Wi-Fi is available for guests in common areas. While speeds vary, most guests are able to message family, upload photos, or manage essential online tasks.

We encourage guests to enjoy the slower rhythm of island life — mornings in the water, afternoons in the shade, and evenings under the stars.

Food & Drinking Water

  • Three home-cooked meals per day are included.
  • Drinking water, tea, and coffee are provided.
  • Meals are prepared using fresh, local ingredients, with seafood featuring regularly.

If you have dietary requirements, it’s best to let us know in advance.
