The Island & Snorkeling

A Marine Paradise

Jou-Suba Homestay is located on the eastern shore of Yef Kabu, a small, uninhabited island off the west coast of Waigeo in Raja Ampat. This far-western area lies well beyond the region’s busiest snorkelling and diving routes, creating a noticeably quieter and more untouched environment.

Because fewer boats and visitors reach this side of Raja Ampat, the reefs here remain exceptionally healthy. Above the water, the island feels calm and remote; below the surface, coral gardens thrive with minimal disturbance. It’s a place where nature still sets the pace.

The House Reef

One of the greatest advantages of staying at Jou-Suba is the house reef directly in front of the bungalows. There’s no need to organise daily boat trips or follow schedules — snorkelling begins just a few fin kicks from the beach.

The reef offers a variety of conditions suited to different confidence levels:
Coral gardens close to shore, filled with colour and marine life
Shallow areas ideal for long, relaxed snorkels and beginners
Gentle drop-offs for more confident swimmers looking to explore deeper sections

Conditions are generally calm, and snorkelling is best enjoyed with awareness of tides and local advice, which we’re always happy to share.

What You’ll See

The waters around Jou-Suba are rich with life. Guests regularly encounter schools of reef fish, turtles, and blacktip reef sharks cruising the shallows. Hard and soft corals create a constantly shifting underwater landscape, alive with movement and colour.

Manta rays are often seen in nearby waters during the season, particularly when conditions are right. Even on quieter days, the diversity of marine life makes snorkelling straight off the beach endlessly rewarding.

Nearby snorkelling & excursions

While the house reef is a highlight in itself, Jou-Suba is also well positioned for snorkelling trips to surrounding areas. Aljui Bay, known for its dramatic limestone cliffs and vibrant marine life, is one of the most popular nearby destinations.

Excursions are arranged locally and depend on sea conditions, weather, and guest interest. This flexible approach ensures trips are timed for safety, comfort, and the best possible experience.

The Experience

Snorkelling at Jou-Suba isn’t about ticking off sites or rushing from place to place. It’s about freedom — returning to the water when the light changes, floating quietly above coral, and ending the day with salt on your skin and the sun dropping behind the island.

Think Robinson Crusoe — but with some of the best snorkelling on the planet, right outside your bungalow.
